Automatic Update, an essential feature of Windows, does not seem to attract the user's attention. Why is that?
There are a few times I've been surfing through web pages with headlines like "tips to make Windows run faster", "great tips on Windows you probably do not know" or something like that, and among them the correct ones. There is something wrong, but what I find most anxious is that they advise users to disable the Automatic Update feature. I am even more surprised when so many users agree with turning it off, assuming it does not deliver anything but annoying and frustrating things. But, after the attack on WannaCry over the weekend, is it a little annoying to turn off Automatic Update if it's worth the effort, as you become a prey to malicious code and malware? Why is the user ready for a small advantage in the immediate eye that is willing to give up his long-term interests?
During the last weekend, I borrowed a laptop from a friend near my house to work. His machine is running Windows 7 Ultimate, cracked. By the way, WannaCry extortionist is raging all over the world, I checked it out: Windows Update has been disabled, patches are not installed, even simple protections like closing the Connection port, disable SMBv1 feature, ... has not been implemented yet. I have asked why he left the machine in a state of no defense at all, the web has a lot of information about WannaCry may not be aware of its danger to get the answer. that: "this machine from the shop brought to reinstall Win a few months ago have touched anything on it where to go to school all day and then to hit a two games before going to bed, the Union"
I was forced to spend 10 minutes of my life explaining to him why users like him were more or less contributing to WannaCry's "success", that he was probably the target of It faced all of its data being lost, including dozens of "rare documents" that he had accumulated in collections that I could not say. However, the problem I want to say here is that he can totally save me 10 minutes if he knows that his Automatic Update feature has been disabled and turned on, because Microsoft has released a patch for this vulnerability for Windows 7 since March.
I gave it away to him and made him promise to pay more attention to protecting himself on the Internet to go home.On coming home, I opened up a small survey with my friends and acquaintances, provided they know what Windows Update is, see if they disable the feature and why. Here I would like to share my results, along with my thoughts on that reason:
Windows always chooses the wrong time to update.
This is the reason I think is the most popular. What's annoying is that you are running a certain job and Windows notifies you that you have to reboot to complete the update, right? However, the current version of Windows, namely Windows 10 has tools to help you manage your updates easier and more convenient.
Windows always wants me to upgrade to Windows 10 and I do not want to.
It can be said, Windows 10 is a Microsoft achievement, and they have the right to be proud of it, want it to be present on as many devices as possible. But, Microsoft's use of the Windows Update engine to make users upgrade is somewhat outrageous, annoying and even counterproductive users, so they do not want to upgrade. Perhaps the best solution to this problem is that users have to sympathize with Microsoft, as they only want users to have the best experience as well as be secure.
This issue I completely understand. With the quality of the network in Vietnam, downloading updates seems like a torture, especially if sharks are "inspired" and decide to dine with AAG fiber optic cables. When the installation is complete, the user will have to restart the computer, wait for the machine to set new changes can continue the work is interrupted. It's a good idea to install Windows just to update your free time, so it's much easier.
Update changes too many things
Except for an update to a whole new operating system version or major updates like Creator Update, Anniversary, etc. Windows updates are either security fixes or system patches, complete. All will not affect the user experience (or at least you will not be able to recognize it).
Updates will make the software incompatible with the new operating system
Compared with the new Windows 10, this phenomenon has greatly reduced. You may have trouble installing drivers if your device is too old, so consider investing in a new device.
Not broken, no need to fix
This is a completely understandable point of view. However, keep in mind that if your computer needs security patches, it is theoretically "broken".
My machine likes to do is my thing
Okay :(
I prefer to update manually
There is no reason to do so when Windows can do it for you. Not to mention, if you miss an important update it is also very difficult to track down and make your computer the target of the attacks.
The ending: Updating, patches the operating system you are using can be time-consuming, annoying and interrupting the work. Everybody has a reason for their actions. But after all, it's a necessity.
Take the WannaCry attack as a "wake-up call," protect yourself against the Internet, and protect yourself by protecting yourself.

Many have recently cried because of the malicious code WannaCry
